2018 North Star Chapter President, Justin Reed, MAI,
with 2018 Appraisal Institute President, James Murrett, MAI, SRA
We have many things to be thankful for as the Appraisal Institute North Star Chapter enters another year of existence. The Appraisal Institute has remained a thought leader due, in part, to its publications, educational offerings and legislative efforts. The combined efforts of many towards the common good of creating transparency and competency in the marketplace have indeed paved the way for the Institute to remain the preeminent source of valuation expertise.
The North Star Chapter has been blessed to have a higher than average amount of involvement within its Board of Directors. We have also been fortunate enough to have received several decades of dedicated service from our Executive Secretary, Maribelle Cushman. Thanks to all for their commitment and their countless sacrifices made on behalf of the profession!
As executive support roles continue transitioning to Association Development Services (ADS), with Sheryle Hazard at its helm, I encourage all members to interact with Sheryle and her staff. The ADS Team is very capable of meeting your needs and I personally have been impressed with their level of professionalism. Their team structure and systems approach will undoubtedly enhance our Chapter and its processes in the coming years so please make them feel welcome within our organization!
Please be aware Maribelle will continue to support the ADS Team throughout 2018 but the majority of administrative and reporting responsibilities now fall on ADS.
In other ‘not so new news”, demographics among appraisers and legislation remain real concerns for our future. This information is not surprising if you’ve spent more than a day in the industry. However, each threat is like inflation — we all see the inherent risk but the consequences typically occur very gradually over time.
Given what we know as professionals, our biggest threat is therefore complacency. Planning for our collective future and providing leadership in the marketplace will prevent our industry from any type of meaningful contraction. A sense of urgency is needed if we want our future to surpass our past.
The Appraisal Institute needs YOUR ideas, YOUR involvement as well as YOUR commitment to advance your skillset. This might be in the form of education, adopting/sharing new technologies or through welcoming others into the profession by mentoring. Without each of these things, a real danger in becoming obsolete does exist. In an era where technology plays a bigger role in the structural elements of our economy, we all know the marketplace tends to find creative solutions for its unmet needs. Rest assured the Appraisal Institute will continue having the highest standards of practice in the industry to guide us in these endeavors.
My goal for 2018 is to remind you of the larger context in which we all work and facilitate a bridge so we can come together and embrace our collective future. Perhaps our work even creates a new reality for tomorrow! The Appraisal Institute provides us the framework to face the market as professionals, educate ourselves in all things valuation and guide legislation to promote market transparency. My request this year is for you to bring your professionalism, passion and your ideas to the Appraisal Institute. Bring a new member too! We have many bright professionals among us but it is undeniable we’ll always be stronger when united!
I look forward to serving you and working to advance our profession in 2018.
Justin Reed, MAI
